November 30, 2011

Hey Guys! Instead of an indie update this week I decided I'm going to give you a Christmas music update, besides 'tis the season.

The Killers came out with a great Christmas album that is now available on iTunes, it's called (RED) Christmas, it is a great album AND all proceeds are being donated to the Global Fund. The album features six original songs only The Killers could write. The most popular song on the album is "The Cowboy's Christmas Ball", which to me doesn't really sound like much of a Christmas song, but it is still a good song nonetheless. My favorite song on the album is "A Great Big Sled", the combination of The Killers sound and the Christmas feel is awesome.

Michael Buble never disappoints but his new album Christmas is amazing. His incredible voice singing Christmas songs really gets you into the holiday spirit. The album features classics such as "Santa Clause is Coming to Town", "Jingle Bells", "Santa Baby" and "Silent Night".

As much as I hate to say it the Glee Cast Christmas album is really good. Again, it features all the classic Christmas songs but they put an upbeat twist on it and make it hard not to sing along. It is called The Christmas Album Volume Two, and it is available on iTunes!

The album to stay away from this holiday season is obviously the Justin Beber Christmas album. It is way too poppy for my liking and simply doesn't feel like Christmas music. His weak attempt to make a good Christmas album may fool the twelve-year-olds but it won't fool me!

WPNR Mosh Pit!

Sup all, Zach here with your hardcore and metal news!

Sad day in the world of post hardcore as Thursday has decided to call it quits.  The band of course was a huge contender in the underground music scene for years, influencing many post hardcore bands of today.  What gets even worse is the news that Thrice has gone on a hiatus.  The band has announced that they will continue to make music but they will no longer be a touring band.  Both of these bands played a huge influence on my music tastes when I was growing up, so it's pretty hard to see them go. Timeless stuff though, no doubt kids will still be jamming to records from both bands for years to come.

After reading that heart breaking news, I bet you could use a few laughs. So here's a joke: Emmure. That one gets me every time. The band has just announced they're working on their newest full length. How they're going to top "Speaker of the Dead" is beyond me, as it's probably one of the best- Ok I can't even type that with a straight face.

That's about all I have for this week. Tune in to WPNR 90.7FM for the semester's final broadcast of "Pop Punk Erotica" with Zach and Vikki Monday at 4, and "The Moose Mosh" Wednesday at 6! Never fear, both shows will be back next semester!

Till next week. Mosh hard!

The Audiophile

What's up guys and gals?

Its Ashley here with your weekly Active Rock/Alternative update. Being a super hipster, of course I thought I should let you guys know about  Put the Needle on the Record, a new book by Matthew Chojnacki that tells the stories of vinyl sleeve art in the 1980s. The book contains pictures of sleeve art followed by a commentary from designers, photographers, and the bands themselves. Although the 80s may have quite possibly been the worst time for music, it should still be interesting.

State faults, formerly known as Brother Bear just released a brand new song called "Arrowhead" of their album that drops early next year, Desolate Peaks. I gave it a listen and got really excited when the opening chord struck, but when I heard the unbelievably shrill voice of their singer I was completely let down. The whole time I listened I just wanted to strip the song of the vocals and replace them with someone better. I'll link you to a free download of the song here anyway, since everyone's taste is different.

Placeholder, formerly known as Coastal just released a single "Give Up" off of their album Nothing is Pure which will be released on December 20. I'm not exactly sure who to compare them to, but I really enjoyed the song I got to hear, and I definitely encourage you to check it out. Let me just say I can't wait to hear this album.  Now I think i'll feed you some newly released albums if you still have room after Thanksgiving.

Albums
Gallows' Death is Birth EP drops on December 5, and although the album is less than eight minutes from start to finish, it will, to say the least, rip you a new one. This is the band's first new release since their former singer Frank Carter left the band. I gave the song "True Colours" a listen, and I must say I respected the fact that former Alexisonfire guitarist, and current Gallows frontman Wade Macneil doesn't try to be Frank, but still does a great job of filling the shoes he was left with.

Shows
There isn't much going on this week in our area, but be sure to check out My Morning Jacket on Wednesday, November 30, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

That's all I have for today, but be sure to tune in to The Hipster 100 on Tuesday and Thursday at 10 for more of your favorite Alternative music.

See you next week!

The Audiophile

Whats up guys?

It's Ashley here with your active rock/alternative update!Today, I thought I'd start you guys off with a little musical teaser. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones just released an in studio video during the making of their new album The Magic Youth which will be released on December 6. Be sure to put it on your Christmas list, because from what I've heard on the video alone, it sounds like its going to be a great record. You can check out the video here.

Albums
Thomas Kalnoky of Streetlight Manifesto just released a new album Streetlight Lullabies under his side project's street name Toh Kay. I was a bit shocked when I first heard it, only because it completely reverses the upbeat melodic ska sound of Streetlight Manifesto. He replaces horns, sax, drums and hard skanking with his voice and an acoustic, and serenades you with a quiet croon, and dark lyrics. Don't get me wrong, its great music to relax to, but I'm definitely partial to Streetlight.

Listening to the new Post Teens album Post Teens EP was like striking a gold mine. They are the closest i've heard a band come to reviving the old-school punk sound, and I was impressed to say the least. You'll get through the album quite fast, but with hard hitting tracks like When I'm Wasted, it will leave you wanting more.

We are the Union just released a four track EP titled Graveyard Grins Ep which proved that the old "You can't judge a book by it's cover, but you can an album" assumption may not always be accurate. I was pleasantly surprised after being a bit uneasy after seeing the corny cover, but these guys actually have it together. It isn't my usual cup of tea, but since this is an active rock blog, i'll let you guys know anyway. They're classified as ska-punk, but I would compare them to a watered down version of A Day To Remember. You can stream the album for free here, and I'll leave it up to you to decide what you think of it.

Shows
Since everyone is most likely going home this week for Thanksgiving, I though i'd let you know that Gallows will be in New York City on Tuesday, November 22. I realize it's probably a little too late, but they deserve to be mentioned (with or without Frank) especially for you city people. Also, The Ready Set will be in Clifton Park on the 23rd.

Thats about all I have for today. I'll post again sometime early next week, but until then tune into my show, The Hipster 100 on Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. See you next week!

Hey you little saucy  meatballs :)

Be sure to tune into another fun filled Pasta Bowl on 90.7 fm at 5pm :)
Heres an update of what all your favorite stars have been up to this week........

The new video for Beyonce's song "End of Time"
After a clip of a very young Beyoncé thanking the judges in a talent show, the singer stands center stage and belts out the lush, inspirational ballad over a montage of home videos from her childhood, through her rise with Destiny's Child and into solo superstardom. And, oh yeah, a blink-and-you-miss-it shot even includes a peek at the voluminous white wedding gown she wore at her very private wedding to Jigga, not to mention some silly footage of Queen B getting her Slip 'n Slide on.

Bieber News
Earlier this week Bieber did an interview on an early morning talk show discussing everything from his early crush on Selena to the crazy law suit against him. Bieber states
"Right now, I'm focusing on my album and the music and the [Pencils of Promise] charity we're doing, and just being positive because Christmastime is a time for joy and happiness, so that's what I'm thinking," Bieber told Elvis Duran and crew. "And as far as the whole baby situation, it's unfortunate that it had to happen like that. People make false accusations, but things happen in this industry and you have to keep your head high and be positive."

Drake is making “Headlines” with projections that his album sales will bump Mac Miller from the prized #1 spot on the music charts. Take Care is currently predicted to sell between 675,000 and 725,000 its its first week, putting Drake in the running for the third best first-week sales of 2011. The Young Money rapper is competing with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which sold 1.1 million copies in its first week and, of course, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV which almost reached a million.

November 16, 2011

Hey guys! Here is this weeks indie update brought to you by the one and only Becky.

I listened to Givers for the first time the other day, and I absolutely fell in love with their new album In Light. The first song on the album "Up Up Up" is a great upbeat way to start, and a great way to lead into their next song "Meantime", another upbeat happy song. "Saw You First" shows their softer side, and sounds a little like Vampire Weekend. The album as a whole is really awesome, and a great listen to anytime kind of music.

I had never heard of the band Royal Bangs until this past week when I listened to their album Flux Outside. The album has a really awesome upbeat indie feel, and the lead singer has an amazing and unique voice. It is defiantly a little difficult to get into at first but I recommend giving it a shot.

In not so indie news, Say Anything joined Equal Vision Records and are now recording a new album that will be released in early 2012! I am pumped, and I am sure they will not disappoint.

To hear more indie and not so indie news, tune in to my show every Wednesday at 2 and 5!

Sup ladies and germs? Here's this week's hardcore and metal news!

Gallows new EP is set for release! This is of course their first release since original vocalist Frank Carter left the band.  Frank's spot was filled by ex Alexisonfire (RIP) member Wade MacNeil.  Personally I'm very excited to see what Gallows does for this new record.  I have no doubt that Wade will fill Frank's shoes to the best of his ability, of course it's not easy to replace a vocalist as iconic as Frank Carter. I'm hoping though that he won't try to hard to "be Frank" if I were Wade and the band, I would try and develop not a totally new sound, but something a little different while still keeping Gallows roots.
You can snag the EP December 13th!

Attack! Attack! has also released details on what is going to be their full third length.  And of course with any new Attack! Attack! record, it comes with a vocal change.  Caleb will be doing all the vocals- clean and screams after losing their guitarist and vocalist Johnny Franck.  The album "This Means War" is set to drop January 17th.

Don't forget to tune in to the Moose Mosh every Wednesday at 6!

Hey guys, It's Ashley here with your weekly Active Rock and Alternative update.

I am regretted to inform you that Tyson Ritter informed his fans via tweet that former Taking Back Sunday bassist Matt Rubano will be playing bass for The All-American Rejects. I reallly hope that this is just a nightmare, and i'll wake up and think, "Wouldn't that be something?" But lets be realistic here. Let's also wish a happy birthday to Travis Barker.

Angels and Airwaves just released a new video for the song "Anxiety" from their new album Love Part II. Its a bit too pop sounding at some points for my personal taste, but overall it grows on me each time I hear it. I'll leave you the link here so you can check it out!

PJ Bond also released a new video for "I'm in a bad way". off his first solo album You didn't know I was alphabetical. When I heard the intro I wasn't sure I would like it because of it's very twangy modern country sound, but after listening further, it truly is such a beautiful song. If you're a true audiophile (lover of music) i'm sure you'll at least be able to appreciate it. I haven't been able to find the video on youtube, but here is a link to the article in Alternative Press Magazine where you can watch the video, and download the song for free. Sounds like a good deal to me.

William Beckett, former The Academy is... frontman played a brand new song off of his upcoming album You and I Against the World. This song was about as sappy as the title of the album, but it wasn't too bad. If you feel like givng it a chance i'll link you to where you can check it out. See what I did there?

Thats all I have for today! Be sure to tune in to The Hipster 100 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Or just stay in bed. That works too.
Bye!

Hey my little meatballs :)

Here is the latest on all your favorite celebrities!

We're not sure if this is real or a publicity stunt or not but this dj IS NOT HAPPY with Nick Cannon apparently tied balloons to Charlie Roo, co-host of his radio show Sarah Lee's dog, and released him into the sky.Now he's apparently floated across the hudson and is over New Jersey somewhere.
If it's real, that's so sad!If it's fake, couldn't they think of a better way to get publicity????
Ive seen the video and its so sad :( really hope this is a sick joke or that PETA gets involved!

Nicki Minaj is in demand this week!
After performing at the Versace for H&M launch party on Tuesday, the Pink Friday princess took the runway at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show last night. For the taping, Nicki wore a custom design that included a florescent corset, hand painted graffiti skirt, and a mirror ball shrug jacket.
Im not the biggest fan of the stars outfit, what did you guys think?

In GLEE NEWS
We think Adele would be proud!
And gosh, the turn around this show has! It's insane!!!
Not two weeks ago did we report that Glee had taped their 300th performance, with Naya Rivera, Amber Riley and Heather Morris tackling a wicked cool mashup of two of Adele's latest hits.
While we're not too sure about the plot context of this performance, we can tell you that it is SUPER hot, with Naya giving some of her best vocals to date!
We're impressed!!!

BE SURE TO TUNE IN TONIGHT FOR THE PASTA BOWL :) 5pm only on 90.7fm

Hello everyone! This is Becky with this weeks indie update.

I am extremely excited this week because we got the new Neon Indian album Era Extrana. I've heard of Neon Indian before, but I've only really heard a few songs. I was a little skeptical when the first song, "Heart: Attack" came on. The instrumental intro had great sound but I wasn't entirely sure where it was going. I was pleasantly surprised when the next song, "Polish Girl" started playing. The vocals are smooth and make you want to hear more. If you're into stellar synths and awesome melody this album is for you.

On another note Four Years Strong has a new album called In Some Way, Shape, or Form. Although it doesn't sound like the Four Years Strong everyone fell in love with, the new album has a lot of depth. They don't let the emotion in the album affect the playful tone, which I think is great. Old fans might not be pumped at first but I think this album will grow on everyone.
This week in the world of music one of the greatest boxers and a legend in the rap world has past. Joe Frazier and Heavy D passed away yesterday on the 8th. Heavy D & the boys debuted in the rap seen 1987. some songs that heal always be remembered for are "Now that we found love" and "The overweight lovers in the house". Joe Frazier is one of the only people to beat Muhammad Ali at his best and was world heavy weight champion.

After all the years of success Shakira finally gets a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. she is now the first Colombian to have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame

Hey Guys!

Its Ashley, here to bring you you weekly alternative/active rock update!

Albums:
Alternative Press just reviewed a new album titled Split EP from Handguns/Forever Game Calling, and I have to say, as far as pop-punk goes I was pretty impressed. The album will be released on Tuesday, October 8, and its filled with fast and upbeat tracks, along with vocals that you just have to sing along to.

I haven’t found much as far as upcoming shows this week that I have not previously mentioned, so for now, I’ll leave you with some of what I’ve been listening to this week.

Be sure to tune in to The Hipster 100 on Tuesday and Thursday at 10!

Hey guys heres alittle celeb gossip to hold you over till Tuesdays Pasta Bowl :)

What all our favorite little celebrities are up too......
They may already be guaranteed to live forever in the hearts of Twihards across the land, but Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were officially immortalized in cement today.
The Twilight Saga trio became the latest stars to be honored with a Hand and Footprint Ceremony outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Before doctors advised Rihanna to cancel her concert in Sweden, the star was seen walking around her hotel, looking happy and strong despite the ailment.
The Barbadian has been battling a nasty case of the flu, and has now been forced to call off her second show in as many days this week because of exhaustion.
"Sorry Malmo!!! #LOUDtour," Rihanna tweeted Monday, along with a pic of herself hooked up to IVs. "I am sorry to everyone who was coming out to my show."
"I was so excited to perform for you. It would have been a great time, so much better than being sick with the flu, ugh! I'm really disappointed I can't be there."
Organizers are working to reschedule the shows. We'll drink to that.

Lady Gaga will sit down with ABC's Katie Couric for a TV special that will air three weeks from tonight. Its title is short, sweet and holiday-themed:
A Very Gaga Thanksgiving.
The special promises an intimate look inside the private life of the pop superstar, who will perform eight songs - including "Marry the Night," "You and I," "The Edge of Glory," "White Christmas" and "Lady and the Tramp" with Tony Bennett.

What's up ladies and germs. Zach here delivering your hardcore and metal news!

2 albums I really want to talk about this week from Close Your Eyes and Counterparts. Both bands call Victory Records their home. Now I know what you're thinking- if it's from victory, it's God awful. While this is usually true these two bands are definitely an exception.

Not the usual death/grind/metal/??? genre you usually get from a heavy Victory band. CYE and Counterparts deliver real, good hardcore/punk.  Empty Hands and Heavy Hearts is CYE's second full length release. The Christian hardcore band delivers powerful sing alongs with inspiring lyrics then goes into a circle pit worthy riff. Counterparts is probably one of the best new hardcore bands I have heard in a while. "The Current Will Carry Us" is 11 songs of crushing instrumentals and vocals guaranteed to stir up a pit. Not your typical chug chug breakdown, overweight hawdcoa' kids with neck tats, however. Counterparts brings back meaningful hardcore, you won't find any lyrics about "repping your crew" here. Give both albums a spin- I promise they're worth your time.

Be sure to stay caught up on WPNR's top 30 charts every week! You can find them right here on the Pioneer Playlist every Tuesday!

Also be sure to tune into "Pop Punk Erotica" with myself and Vikki every Monday at 4 and of course "The Mooose Mosh" Wednesdays at 6!

Until next week- Mosh hard.

Hey Guys,

It's Ashley here with your weekly Alternative/Active Rock update.

Albums
The Pianos Become The Teeth just released a new album The Lack Long After and I urge you to check it out. His voice can be a lot to handle at times, but the music is just too good.
The Decemberists just released their new EP Long Live The King and I was actually impressed. It definitely has more of an indie vibe, but less of a folk sound like their previous albums. Definitely check it out if you're into that sort of thing. Its great music to fall asleep to, and I mean that in the nicest way possible.
Also, The Smashing Pumpkins latest album Oceana come out on the 19th!

Shows
Infected Mushroom is coming to Clifton Park on the 18th, and City and Colour will be in Niagra on November 30!

I had never heard the band Wolves at Bay until sometime last week, and I must say I'm impressed. I heard their new song "Breaking in Two" and immediately fell in love. They don't have very much out there right now, but check them out on facebook for updates and new music. Or you can check out "Breaking in Two" here.
Heres "Fought This Through."

Thats all I have for now! Be sure to tune in to 90.7 FM on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 for my show "The Hipster 100"
Hello Indie Fans!

Incase you haven't heard, after a two and a half year break, Yellowcard released an all acoustic album called When You're Thinking, Say Yes. Although, the fans seem to be loving it, I'm not incredibly fond of it. A lot of it sounds whiney, and the songs all seem to be about the same thing. The sound however, is everything, and so much more that you would expect out of Yellowcard. Even though I wasn't crazy about this album I will say that Yellowcard came back with a bang that will blow their fans away.

This past week, I discovered a band called The Color Pharmacy, I picked up their album to give it a listen because I liked the creative name, and I was pleasantly surprised. They just released their new album Texatonka. Their song "Before the Nighttime's Over" is a great intro into the album. It has a lot of feeling and is followed by "The Taste of the Summertime" a song that just about everyone can relate to. This is a great listen-to-anytime album, and I highly recommend giving it a listen.

Other Albums To Look Out For:

Florence + The Machine - Ceremonials
Girl In A Coma- Exits And All The Rest
Tycho - Dive

Be sure to check out my show on Wednesday at 2 and 5!
